Thursday was a whirlwind for me (and I guess for Shawn as well). I took Logan & Malachi up to my mom's for the day and overnight and I went to KC to pick up Shawn from the airport. Now, I left home at 2pm to meet up with friends, get a little shopping done, and arrive at the airport with plenty of time to spare. Shawn, however, finished his training early and arrived at the Chicago airport around 2pm, with a flight out at 9:30 or 9:50pm I think. So, he spent most of his afternoon talking with strangers (please don't mention this to my boys yet!) and befriending several other passengers that were also waiting for later flights.
After a harrowing ordeal getting to the airport, leaving my friends house at dark, in a location I'm not real familiar with, Mapquest directions in hand, yet a storm scaring me out of my wits, I start trying to head to the airport. Remembering that we were in a tornado watch earlier and not liking the looks of the frequent lightning, I called my sister to see what was going on. The rain was so heavy that in the 55 mph, I was barely going 20mph and starting to hydroplane. I had no clue where I was or if I was going to make it, as I could really see the van losing control with the wind and heavy downpour of rain. Yep, I was in the severe storm! Thankfully though, I made it through that and road construction and safely arrived at the airport. I had about 1/2 hour to bruch my hair, tidy up, and read a couple of my new magazines before Shawn's flight arrived (on time- luckily).
I was so excited to see Shawn, and so tired at the same time. We both were exhausted from a very long day and long week. We waited about an hour for the luggage to arrive and finally left the airport, holding hands. Yes, absense makes the heart grow fonder, or at least for the first few hours! :) Anyway, I helped navigate through the airport traffic & we exited without a problem. We headed toward our interstate to rush home and hit our nice soft pillows for a few hours before waking up early to go get our kids. We were just chatting away and having a decent conversation. And I suddenly started to pay attention to the road signs, thinking it was really unfamiliar and that we should have hit our exit for the interstate home by now. That's when I realized we were on NORTH bound rather than SOUTH bound!!!!
"Hon. . . I think we took a wrong exit." Shawn looked at me a little dumbfounded, thinking it couldn't be possible. However, I pulled out our map and sure enough . . . we were almost to Nebraska or Iowa- headed north out of Missouri! Realizing our mistake, we wanted to turn around immediately since we were wasting precious sleep time and I was starting to feel the burn in my eyes. Five miles later, we found an exit to turn around and head back the way we should have gone in the first place. Needless to say, we went about 45 miles out of our way, but, it was quality conversation time and we got a good laugh out of it (expensive as it was with gas prices, but all the while, a memory).
We got 4 hours of sleep before the alarms blared and we headed to get our kids. Next time, we'll pay a little closer attention to the road signs and not be so involved in conversation. :)
