Happy Birthday Zachary!

Today, my oldest son is 5 years old! I'm so proud of him & so blessed to have him as my son. Without getting all sentimental and sobby (is that even a word?), I would like this post to be in honor of Zachary & what a great kid he's been.

Zachary was born July 30, 2003, after an incredibly hot summer. He was the first grandkid on my side, and the first boy grandkid on Shawn's side. It was a huge lesson for us straight from our maker about "His time, not ours". You see, Zachary was actually due on Shawn & my 1st wedding anniversary. We hadn't planned on needing a babysitter for that occasion, but God sometimes has different plans! :) I was in the middle of school, yet incredibly determined to continue & finish to be able to pursue my lifelong dream of becoming a teacher.

Being pregnant with Zachary was a brand new experience to us as newly-weds and it was such an exciting and memorable time as well. Although it started out quite rough, (see previous blog post) we made it through and were incredibly blessed to have such a healthy, wonderful baby boy. And, I swore that never again would we be pregnant again through the summer time!

Shawn was a natural at being a daddy. He was amazing in every sense. (Although, his first night being a dad, was a little memorable to say the least- He slept nice & sound a few feet away from my hospital bed as I continued to wake with Zachary. Thankfully, the nurses there kept me company. Shawn had had a long day and must have needed some rest!) But, as much as I love to kid him about slacking off on his first night on the job, he really stepped it up and stayed home with Zachary during the week while I went to school. He found out first hand how difficult it is to get anything done with a baby.

And, now our baby will be starting kindergarten and before we know it (weep, weep) he'll be off to college (more than likely KU). Each day with him truly is a blessing and Shawn and I are so priveleged to have been given the responsibility of being his parents. It is truly an honor and a challenge as well.

First great-great grandbaby on my side & my great grandmother finished a quilt she had been making for her only son (my grandpa) but never finished.

Sometimes, Zachary & Shawn would ride along in the surburban with me to go to school. Zachary loved college life! He spent his first 18months walking ESU halls with me.

Zachary's first summer harvest. Growing up with custom harvesters, it was important to us to have him experience this as well.
