Updating an Old Blog

For one of my classes this semester, I have to post updates on my teacher blog. So, in case you wonder who's blog that is over on my side bar, that would be another blog of mine. I only have two blogs- that's plenty. I hope to keep the teacher blog a little bit more current now that I'm using it more. Feel free to add comments or suggestions.

Boy Scouts and Jury Duty

Last night, I had a webmaster meeting that I couldn't attend because Shawn got called in to work. He NEVER gets called back in, but both last night and tonight there have been critical exams that he's had to do. I guess I never realized how nice it was when he was on call for x-ray, he could just go and do an x-ray and be home within an hour at the MOST. Now, by the time they call him, he has to call Topeka Pharmacy to get the drug doses and they have a certain call-back time to get there and mix up the dose and send it on the way to Manhattan. So already its at least an hour. Then the nuc med exams are usually at least an hour if not 2 or more hours long. So, when Shawn called me at 3:00 and told him that he would have an exam and couldn't pick Zachary up for his boy scouts meeting, I knew I had to step up and get it done, no matter how I felt. I know my icky attitude couldn't have made it much fun for the boys, but we got-er-done.

Zachary had a great time on the hayrack ride. Logan, Malachi and I were on for the first 5 minutes before some of the adults noticed the flat/low tires, so we all jumped off and let the "kids" ride. Some adults didn't get that message! :) It was boredom at the extreme and trying to keep 2 rowdy kids from playing in the dirt and making a mess all over was not easy to do. I missed Shawn because this is "his" thing to do with Zachary. I love having Zach in boy scouts and know how proud he is to be a boy scout and how happy its made him, but I'm just not boy scout material. We had to stay FOREVER to get his awards and then left after that. It was just one of those nights that we were close enough to Manhattan that I decided to just run to town for supper- at 7:30pm! We usually eat at about 5pm, so I'd been feeding Logan and Malachi snacks and gum from my purse to tide them over. (I'm not going to the Best Mom Award FYI!)
Photobucket
Here is a snapshot of us on the hayrack ride. Its pathetic, I know, but kinda funny! I had my little camera, so don't pay attention to the poor quality.

I had some photo-ops with the little boys while Zachary was off on the hayrack ride.

And Logan made an instant friend, who had a rock-chasing dog. This dog was the sweetest dog and she retrieved ROCKS! She wouldn't budge if you threw a stick, but if you threw a huge piece of gravel, she was after it right away. It was all fun and games until a rock went off course and hit an old horse trailer. (It wasn't thrown by my boys, just so ya know.) Then, I realized that it'd probably be a better idea to just pet the dog rather than play fetch, even though it was pretty cool.

Logan liked the campfire. He really was intrigued with the embers from the fire. He said, "Ah, you see all those little baby fires????" And as he was trying to walk around the fire, the wind shifted, sending some of those his way, which got him jumping and running and freaking out. It was hilarious! He took this picture:

I had my first ever jury duty today. It was STRESSFUL and then relieving. I really wonder what the outcome of it was though. Anyone know how I can find out????? I got almost to town and realized I didn't have my purse with me with my Driver's License, and I didn't want to be late, so I rushed home (sped a little) and low and behold- my purse WAS in the dirty van, under my teacher bag and jacket!!! Urgh! By the time I got to the courthouse, I was 5 minutes late instead of the 10 minutes early that I'd planned to be, but still got a good parking spot, no ticket, and dismissed from the jury after about an hour and a half of questioning. I have my husband to thank for getting me out of it, although it really sounded like an interesting case that I would have liked to have heard the rest of. Some woman was arrested at Mercy Regional as she was watching her father be administered drugs that she didn't want them to and it resulted in his death (I think was the jest of it). She was charged with trespassing and assault or something on a law enforcement officer. She was also defending herself, which I think was a HUGE mistake. Oh well.

Tomorrow is back to work for me and I will still have a substitute teacher because I have to help give assessments to my students. There is a LOT of stress at work and the good week that I had had seemed to have disappaited as I checked all my emails tonight (since they don't go to my phone anymore right now). Please pray for this situation and guidance. Shawn and I have been praying and are making some MAJOR life-changing decisions about our careers, living situation, and family life. I want to fill you in, but want to make sure we have discernment on the issue first. Thanks for praying for us. I'm praying too that work can get a little less stressful and that everyone can work as a team and appreciate others' efforts and be as positive as possible.

More this week about: health (I know this is boring, but remember this is my journal and way to keep track of somethings like this); relocating (don't want to completely scare some people but we are considering possibly relocating FAR away from here); reviewing products (see post below), and of course, the concert we went to Sunday night. It was beyond description. I want to blog more about that and Logan's funny sayings later. Its bedtime for now. Another night skipping IV treatment, so hoping tomorrow I can maintain blood pressure and strength. :) Thanks for the prayers.

Teacher Blog

It has come to my attention that some have been reading my blog and not too happy with some of the things in it. :) Hmmmm . . . did I strike a nerve with someone? So, I am re-vamping my teacher blog to only include fun aspects of teaching and be as positive as possible on it. While I speak the truth as I know it and have NEVER intended to be slanderous or rude to or about anyone, I feel a little violated in the sense that my words would be taken as something that is so offensive that it would outrage someone.

I feel very conflicted right now with things and am using it as a learning experience as well as a great insight into the individuals that provided this insight for me. Thank you! Without you, I would not have been allowed this opportunity for such in-depth exploration and analyzation of the matter, and would maybe have had a different ending than it has.

Now, back to my family blog!

Monday Dejevu

Yes, I know the title is spelled wrong. It drives me nuts too, but right now, after the day I've had, I really don't care, alright! I've had a day of HELL and that's about putting it lightly. A lot of things came to light today and I'm really thinking over some things about people that have frustrated me today. I don't know. . . I thought last year was bad because I was pregnant and maybe a bit too sensitive, but I'm trying REAL hard to put things into perspective and analyze what's going on and why people act the way they do.

First of all, I am 'attacked' today by a teacher for something that was absolutely NOT my fault. I was involved, and I'll admit that because I was trying to help out in the absense of another teacher, but I've learned my lesson fast- DON'T STEP UP TO THE PLATE! Don't take initiative to cover other people's backs! Fend for yourself and avoid the backlash of ticked off (and rightfully so in a sense) educators. And, when I re-thought the situation and what REALLY happened, I realized that the blame fell almost completely on the child, yet it was a simple mistake. So, I made a mental note today about what to do and what not to do and I certainly know that in the future such bridge might be a bit singed and not as sturdy to cross as it could have been.

And, another thing that really frustrated me more than anything, not really ticking me off, but in a way, maybe. I wonder why people ask what I think about things if all they want to do is debate it! Seriously! I'm not going to say right or wrong! It's NOT for me to freakin judge. I DO have a strong opinion in my head about what I truly believe, but is it really worth the effort to debate the subject! I mean, things work differently for different people and I certainly don't deny that certain things are wonderful and great use for some while others find different methods. Just because I study and research, I will NEVER claim to know it all. I just know that I teach the BEST THAT I CAN with the knowledge that I have. Should I learn a new or better way of doing things in the future, I will certainly do that, based on the research and effectiveness with my students. So, I'm wondering what that was all about and why it was worth a 'debate'? Because, seriously, I doubt any of my opinions hold any water.

So it was a LONG LONG LONG day and I'm trying to jot this down to make notes. I told myself when I started teaching that should it get to the point that I can't be a great teacher, I need to take a break and pull myself away from it. In the spring, I'll look back and see what should be done to preserve my sanity as well as the good name of teaching. I just know that if I have one more day like today, I'm not sure I can handle it. Thank God for the children and the amazing power they possess to make me know that I choose teaching because of them- not the crud that goes along with the grown-up world of teaching.

Monday, Monday!

UGH! The beginning of fall, weather changes, end of a full moon (last week I think), and a variety of other things besides being a darn Monday. I have been trying REALLY REALLY hard lately to not be so cynical and grumpy. However, after today, I decided to give myself just one more pity party before I swore off all grumpiness & grouchy moods. When I first walked into school today (and I was early today which was making me happy!) I was told that I'd be subbing today. Now, I'm NOT a substitute, nor did I care to hear those words today. The secretary said that a teacher called in sick at the last minute, so there were no subs avaiable and the other teacher they would have pulled from our building was also absent. Hmmm . . .

I went through this my first year teaching. I was new, just happy to have a paycheck and really didn't have much of a job title, so I just did as was told. However, after almost a full 9 weeks of constant subbing and being thrown around from room to room, I was exhausted, worn out and feeling like my job was a substitute rather than an academic support teacher. Finally, I got a bit of a stronger backbone and unbit my tongue to express my frustration with subbing so much and feeling as if they really did not try to get anyone else to sub.

So, I had to sub today, which REALLY ticked me off and threw me off completely what I had planned on doing. I worked all Friday evening (while my family went to the football game without me) and all weekend long on specific activities for my students this week. I try my hardest to fill each moment with them with specific activities to target their learning needs. (And, maybe I didn't use ALL weekend as we did have a busy Saturday.) So, I threw those plans in the trash and headed down to the classroom of the teacher I was subbing for. As I arrived there, I was called over the intercom to tell me that I could call this teacher to get some plans. Hmmm.. . is that really MY job to call her and ask for sub plans!!!! UGH!

Besides that, I had door duty at exactly the same time, so I rushed outside to tend to my duties and be around the kids because that's what really calms me down and helps me focus. As I'm out there, I get an offer from someone to take over my duty just as soon as the bells rings. Again, nice timing! So, I lead my class down the hallway toward our classroom for the day. Ah. . . what to do. The sub from the other classroom tried to come next door and help me but we could not find a darn thing. Thank goodness we found a schedule for the day, although it was marked up with last weeks plans.

Ah. . . a Monday! We made it through the day, with lots of "pulling ideas from my head" and resources that I didn't know I had, but we made it. Thank GOD for having a SMART board. I figured that if they didn't care to leave plans, than they must not care what we did all day. We tried to get some journaling done, and math games, but I was REALLY frustrated with the lack of guidance that was given for me to guide the students today. So, tomorrow has GOT to get better is all I kept telling myself all day long. It was like a mantra! :) I had a meeting after school on how to create & maintain blogs for my school, so I wsa really late picking the boys up from daycare, throwing my whole day even more off. Days like this, I enjoy being with them and also enjoy their fun little attitudes that brighten my day.

Introducing . . . . My "Other" website

Starting September 1st (today) I will be posting on a new blog, one specifically for what I intentionally began blogging about to beging with- teaching! My first blog will hopefully be taken down (I did save all the posts in Word) and I will be on a more professional blog for the posts regarding my profession. I'm really excited about this new venture in my life and am hoping that it will be as rewarding as my family blog is right now.

When I was a new teacher, I knew that beginnings are great times to start traditions and I wanted to remember it all, so I created the teacher blog to jot down funny moments, reflections, and contemplations. As I blogged, I also began using it for my religious contemplations as well as family news & happenings. In the reality that I am only human and there are only 24 hours in a day, I will prioritize my time just like I normally do. Therefore, the family blog is first, because those are the memories that I'm most concerned with preserving. Teacher blog will be second, which means not as many posts per week or month. I am setting a goal for 2-3 posts per week, some of which I've already started working on and have scheduled.

I'd appreciate support & interaction on either blog to let me know who my readers are out there. Give me advice, suggestions, or just a few positive comments about what you're reading. And, of course, check out my very own NEW blog!

Grouchy Day

Today was not a good day to be on my bad side! UGH! It just seemed like one thing after another set me off and I was a complete mess all day, not getting anything right. And, there's not a real good reason for why I'm grouchy. I used to tell Shawn, "I'm not being grouchy! I'm just having a rather high intolerance for stupid people right now!"

I've been contemplating friendships lately. Give & recieve. Email and email back. Nice thoughts & words, etc. I'm wondering if I'm a good friend or if I've been completely neglecting my friendships. I also don't want to be incredibly selfish in friendships, but there are times when you just have to decide to cut your losses and be lonely rather than constantly expending yourself for others that don't appreciate it. I used to be an incredibly thoughtful person (or so I thought I was!) :) and got burned so many times. And, I wonder how it all works. It's almost like middle school all over again.

And at work, which I usually enjoy and look forward to. Today was not the day to be at work! It was BUSY and CRAZY. I am tired of so many of the things being done and said and sometimes I just want to shut my classroom door and say, not think! (But, I don't!) Today, I got a request from a teacher in the building for some "tech" thing which usually I'm not too bad at doing. So, I do it for her and offer it to the rest of the building as something they might be able to use. Huh!? What do you know . . . it backfires! Of course, words got said before emails were read completely and lord forbid I exclude certain people. And, my gosh! What a crappy deal! I was (and still am) a bit ticked off and I definitely learned my lesson. Go to work- teach- get the heck out at 3:50 and don't turn back around! UGH! Some days. . . . it's frustrating I tell you. If it weren't for my love of teaching children, I just might lose my mind!

And, I switched my schedule around at work to accommodate others and now have little to no lunch time, something I used to value, but now I'm really starting to care less. I think the busier I can stay the less I can connect and the sooner I can get relief. Maybe I analyze things too much and maybe it's just 'one of those days' but man I'm really starting to re-evaluate what I'm doing in life.

So, I'm ready for bed-time. That was only part of this crummy day. Thank God my boys are being decent tonight and I can enjoy some genuine smiles and a little storytime. Let's hope I can get some rest and enjoy the last 2 days of my work week!

Kindergarten?? Nah. . . I prefer Sanity!

Today was a LONG day! And, I'll start from the beginning, so it might be a bit of a long post (apologies, maybe read 1/2 today and 1/2 tomorrow!). :) I student-taught for a semester in a 95% free & reduced lunch school, which equals extreme poverty. It was MAJOR culture shock for me. The first day of school, we had biting, kicking, hitting, guns, talk of extreme sexual abuse behaviors, a lockdown, and not to mention the entire day screaming fits of 2 selective-muted twins! Yeah, I cried the whole way home and swore that never again would I desire to teach kindergarteners.

I went back and finished that semester and by December we had a good group going. Yes, most did live in the project housing and they had a different lingo and street talk than I was used to in my small town growing up, however, they were so loveable and precious, no matter what their circumstances in life were. By the time my semester was over, I decided the kindergarten was the ONLY grade I really desired to teach.

Enter 1st year in the real teaching field- aka "Shauna with a career!". I had almost finished my 1st year teaching as an academic support teacher (which is the best job in the world) and our district decided to extend the 1/2 day kindergarten to a full-day, thus requiring us to hire a new kindergarten teacher. I was so excited and asked to interview for it, etc. Well, after I interviewed, I wondered if in all my haste if I'd just "shot myself in the foot" because I really did have an awesome job and didn't know if I should have been passing it up so soon. And, then on the other hand, I didn't know when my specific grade level to teach would become available again.

Thank goodness though- I did not get the job. The found a teacher that impressed them beyond anything, made excellent cookies, was crafty, oh, and also was a bit eskimo, so it'd diversify our school a bit more! :) Hehehe! I was happy and disappointed at the same time, but more excited that I could keep my same position. Maybe kindergarten wasn't my thing, however, I still have a heart for those tiny babies as they are so excited about learning.

Now, fast forward to today- I spent all day in kindergarten today. And, I'm pretty sure that I might go insane should I spend any more time there! First of all, the class is very overcrowded for such a tiny room. The teacher, new to the grade level was in tears just talking about the day yesterday and I knew I needed to help save whatever sanity might be left as well as help get her through these days of uncertainity. There were several children in the class that would do much better with a full-time 'helper' to remind them how to act or behave. I spent most of the day helping chase and corral kids off the playground and back into the school.

Lunchtime? Oh, we had white hotdogs for lunch, cheetos, and a tossed salad. So, I spent all my lunchtime opening those not-so-developmentally-appropriate ketchup packages, ranch dressing pockets & cheetos. Not to mention having to open their milk for them.

Mid-way through lunch, 2 of my little darlings (well, actually they are the teachers darlings, as I was just helping) got sick. (Wonder if it was the white hotdogs. They made me a bit nauseous!) And, we rushed to the office so I would escape the splatter should one of them throw-up. Yes, I did get "the look" upon bringing the 2nd child into the office. But, they did send them home, so I feel a little more assured that maybe it wasn't me just freaking out, but they might have really not felt well.

And, finally, plan time arrived and I escaped for the peace & quiet of my tiny classroom. However, I hear a very loud ruckous in the hallway, so go to investigate. Hmmm . .. well, my little babes could not figure out how to walk in the hallway to get to the teacher-assistant's classroom, so they'd been practicing for about 15-20 minutes! I might have just given up by then! So, I helped them, smiling at the onlookers that wondered if we had any control whatsoever with these children. Finally, they arrived quietly and orderly (or better anyway) to the room they were going to and I did get a bit of a break.

My analogy of the day: barnyard kittens! Yes, they are so darn cute but not the least cuddly!

So, even though it's 6:30pm, I'm ready for bed. I'm feeling a bit like this right now:
Photobucket

Kindergarten??? Nah . . . I'll save that for those that don't know or don't care how insane it can be! And, thank God for those special people!

Lunchtime Blogger

Well, it's finally the day I've dreaded all summer. I am back at work full-time. Although I LOVE my position, somedays its hard to juggle being a mom & working. The boys did great today getting up when I asked them and getting going. Instead of a melt-down at the babysitters, I had to remind them to come back and give me a hug & kiss and we even had a fight about which babysitter each boy would go to.

I'm a very analytical person, a trait that drives Shawn nuts! It might have started off worrying about what others thought of me and turned into an obsession with trying to analyze why they act the way they do and empathisizing with others. So, today, being the first day back, with most of the same staff and some newbies, I'm watching and learning what people do and how they act. The dynamics of groups are interesting and it was said many times this morning that "things will be different this year." I wonder . . . and analyze. :)

And getting to the title of my blog post, I have TRIED to work in my classroom and get some things done. The beginning of the year is such an important time to be thinking, "What am I going to do this year? What will I do differently? What things do I need to implement?" There is just so much that I feel a little overwhelmed sometimes and so I decided to get some work done over the lunch hour today. Then, I started thinking- oh, I should take notes to blog about later.

Zachary took some pictures yesterday while he was helping me in my classroom (I'll see about posting them a bit later). I had pulled things out of the cabinets, piled stuff all over the classroom and decided I'd start tackling it head on. Two hours later, I gave up and headed home. I am not a bulletin board, crafty, creative person. Hard to believe, huh? Didn't you think all teachers had to pass Bulletin Boards 101 before being fully qualified to inspire young children? Luckily, I have a tiny classroom that doesn't allow for much in the way of bulletin boards and really, I don't have a lot of choice in what I can put up.

There is no calendar/math/weather corner. There are no creative play areas. I don't have a bulletin board to tack things up to and with so many groups, I'm not sure how to efficiently organize it all. So, I daydream and research, thinking I'll get a vision. Nope, never comes to me. So, I just start tacking things up, thinking, "It's gotta come to me now." Nope! So, I buy pre-made bulletin board sets and start linking them together wondering what the purpose is. Will they inspire or be purposeful or will they be a waste of space and a distraction to the wandering eye?

So, over lunchtime today, I worked on getting a vision of what things should and will look like this year. The stress is sitting in for some and I'm trying to stay as positive as possible, knowing that this year will be good, because I will make the best of things.

Sorry no pics today. Maybe some tomorrow. :)

Hello????

Hello! We've been noticing 'footprints' on our blog and would love to engage in conversation about what you think. PLEASE try out the commenting option below the posts. We'd love to hear what you have to say and it also is kept in the archives for our family journal.

That being said, today was a trial run day for Logan & Malachi at daycare. And, it went well! Thank goodness! I was a little nervous with them not being in daycare since March, but it went amazingly better than I had expected. Tomorrow is another trial run as we try to get up early, out the door & in a routine of getting going. Thursday is the real deal, and oh my, I'm so not ready for it, but hopefully with a little cooperation and practice the last 2 days, the boys will be more in tune with getting going. The logistics of it all will need to get fine-tuned as I will have 2 stops each morning to make before I get to school by 8:00am (and I usually like to be early). So, prayers for safe driving & cooperation from the boys as we go forth on this adventure this school year.
Photobucket
During the 'trial period' of the couple hours Logan & Malachi were at daycare, Zachary helped me in my classroom at school. It was overwhelming at first to walk in and wonder where I should start. I was only back the last couple weeks of school and as much as I tried to put stuff in order and be able to remember where stuff would be, my mind was a bit preoccupied with being back from maternity leave and getting to the end of the school year. So, I just started opening cupboards & doors and sorting one-by-one. I have books to organize & get put in their proper places. I have to make executive decisions as to what in the world to do with my classroom that will be in the best learning interest of groups of K-5 students. So, after a couple hours of piddling around and chatting with co-workers, we left. I'll try to get more done tomorrow! :)
Photobucket
I did notice while at my school that we received enough SMART boards & projectors for each teacher! While this is INCREDIBLY wonderful, it's also frustrating for me. I'm so excited to share my knowledge & enthusiasm for the technology. And, I do hope that the teachers utilize it in proper ways that are in the best interest of the students. However. . . . I worked REALLY hard to earn my SMART board. I had to attend many hours of classes and even worked over my maternity leave to finish my portfolio and presentation. Then, come to find out, most of our teachers are just given them now!
Photobucket
The heat finally subsided a bit more today, allowing Shawn to get our yard mowed, but not trimmed. Zachary has been very busy taking pictures. He was devastated and mad when we got going this morning and he had forgotten his camera at home. Lord forbid he miss a Kodak moment! (I know you know where he gets this!) He got in big trouble tonight as his mean streak is continuing. He slapped Malachi on the face because Malachi was smiling at Logan and not Zachary! UGH! Boys!

Smart Water

This might not be new to you, but it's the first time I've seen or heard of the stuff. Shawn attended training last week in Chicago for the new nuclear medicine camera that the hospital will be installing soon. During the breaks, they offered bottled water:
Photobucket
He thought it was a cute name for a sorta expensive bottle of water. (I think it was like $2.50 for the bottle, which probably was just tap water.) But, I wondered what the concept was behind the title. And, I'm wondering about ordering a caseload (several hundred) for my students. I mean, couldn't we all use some "Smart Water"? Actually, I wouldn't be spending the money on that, but it's a GREAT marketing idea. If you consider brain research and how great water is for the learning brain, it makes complete sense that any quality drinking water would be "smart" water.

What if I took some bottled water and replaced the labels with "good readers water" or "excellent student water"? What purpose would that serve and would it be at all justifiable? I could argue either way really. On one hand, yes, it may get them more motivated to drink more water, which is in fact a good thing. However, it would provide them with a false concept that they are not able to attain the goal (such as good reading) without such help as the "smart water". I've found it quite successful to be upfront & honest with the students and explain to them how water helps their brains to work efficiently and the more water they drink throughout the day, the better refreshed they will feel.

Then, there are the water 'naysayers' that say the more water you give the children, the more they will be interrupted during lessons to go to the bathrooms. As much as that is a valid point, I think the pros outweigh the cons, as if the child is getting up to walk to the bathroom, they are getting exercise and more oxygen to the brain, as well as getting a bit of a break from the dulldrum of lessons they might be experiencing. And, if the lesson is all that purposeful & engaging, most of the time, they will hold it and wait until they won't miss a single thing. Isn't that how our teaching should be anyway???

Just some food for thought . . . Smart water- what's your ideas on the subject????

There is a Light. . .

I see a small glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel! We have our last tball game this evening. As much as I LOVE toting the kids around being a 'soccer mom' (blah!), I am actually enjoying the thought of not having a scheduled day. June is full of tball, soccer, and swimming lessons. We started our first of two weeks of swimming lessons today, and that will end on July 4th! YEAH!!! July is open as of right now, but I'm sure we'll find plenty to do to stay busy. The 10th is scheduled with 2 boys' shots! EEEKS! Zachary finishing his shots for kindergarten and Malachi's 4 month shots.

And as I see a light at the end of the tunnel, I'm wondering if it just might be another train coming. For as much as I'm enjoying slowing down the summertime, I'm starting to dread the impending return to work and waking up before the sun. Bittersweet times!

A family of Teachers

My grandfather was featured in a news article today. Of course, the story is not news to me. I've heard the one-room school stories during my years growing up, both from my mom & aunts & uncles, but mostly from my grandfather. Our family has a rich background of educators- my great-grandfather, grandfather, and of his 13 kids & over 100 grandkids (all of whom we are very close with still) there are 14 that are teachers in some way from pre-k through high school age. We have a wealth of resources- 2 of my aunts are kindergarten teachers, one a middle school math teacher, and cousins that are teachers as well. I thought I'd share the link to the article: http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/news/story/KSProfileLaurencePacey061808.aspx

Enjoy! :)

Interview

Well, I did it. I went with my husbands advice and urging to interview for another position here in town. For those of you that aren't aware, I LOVE my job right now. There are pros & cons as there would be with any job. However, with gas prices, the 1/2 hour drive is becoming a little more expensive and we do live 2 blocks from an elementary school here, which would be a little more feasible to work at.

Well, I interviewed about a month ago for a couple primary positions, which they decided to fill internally. I would have been taking a huge pay cut to take a position here, but it would have gotten my foot in the door. Upon not getting the position here, we were up in the air again about where to send Zachary to school next year and had really wanted to send him to Milford, where I feel he would recieve a much better kindergarten experience for how his reading is right now.

Today, I interviewed (sorta) for the preschool position that I was offered 3 years ago, but turned down because it's only part-time. However, this time, it would be full-time with teaching computers in the afternoons. I ask a lot of questions at my interviews. I like to know what to expect and to have all the information up front. I don't want to walk into something blind-sided or caught off guard.

During the interview, I asked about scheduling. (Since it is working with all the other teachers in the building, I knew the schedule would be strict.) And, not to my surprise, it was back t0 back, with maybe a 5 minute break for toting the computer cart around between classes. Hardly time to even catch a restroom break. So, I asked about plan time. I was assured that plan time was given Monday afternoons & Friday mornings, in a total of about 400 min. per week. Also, it was supposed to include a few minutes here & there to include in that total. Hmmm . . . yeah, that's not really too effective. So, let's see- planning only on Monday & Fridays- do you see a problem with this? I'd still have 400 minutes just like every other teacher in the building even though they get theirs evenly each weekday. For those non-teachers reading this- think about which days we miss the most school of, at least once or twice a month- yep- Mondays or Fridays. So, throughout the year, I would be missing a bunch of planning time, thus affecting my family-time, which I value so much.

And, there was 1 slight little other quirk that bothered me about the position. As much as the school is 'for the students' which is how it should be, it does not seem so great about taking care of the teachers. The district that I work for now is top notch at taking care of the teachers which is thus passed directly on to the students. For example, I asked what professional development looks like here and was told that they mainly use the expertise within the building. This means that each inservice, a different teacher will present on what they consider to be their expertise. Now, this is helpful and nice, but can often be misleading and ineffective for professional development. Call me a nerd, but I do love professional development and inservices when they serve a purpose and are informative & useful. I believe it's my job as an educator to stay up with the current trends & research in the education field. My district brings in top-notch speakers that are nationally recognized and I'm sure very expensive. They even pay the teachers to attend those, even though most would attend just to hear that person speak. Talk about taking care of the teachers.

So, I think my decision has been made, whether or not I hear back from the principal, who I think is getting a little frustrated with all my questions and little answers for them.

Busy Times

This past weekend has been incredibly busy! We started off Thursday & Friday helping my parents clean up tornado damage. It is just amazing what can happen in a tornado and we are so thankful to God for protecting mom & my nephew (Taige) from any harm. Also, the house was spared from major damage as well, so that was a huge blessing as well.

Saturday, we woke up early to load the kids in the van for a 2 hour trek to have a "Day out with Thomas the Train". YEAH! We survived the Wiggles phase, but somehow our kids are more Thomas fanatics than they ever were for the Wiggles (which we did go see live in concert). The Thomas activities & train ride were really great & the kids enjoyed themselves. For the most part, things were actually developmentally appropriate for young children and it was not as much of a nightmare as I had envisioned. Of course, we made the trip a bit quicker than we had planned so we could get home and help out with clean-up at the farm also.

I'm learning this new blog posting, so hopefully will get better as I go! :) I will try to keep it very current and updated with information and pictures. This will cut down on the emails with pictures I send as they will be on here or the bulk of pictures will still be available on facebook where only the people I have listed as friends can see them, thus limiting the exposure.

This week looks to be a very busy one: we have Bible school each night, soccer will start, and still have tball. I go in tomorrow for a sort of interview for a position here that I am really unsure about taking. I had interviewed in the past and prayed for God's discernment on the matter and they ended up filling the positions within which eliminated me from having to chose. Now, being offered a position and having to negotiate makes me a little nervous as to what to do and what is the right thing for me and my family right now. We had sort of already decided to send Zachary to a different school next year that would do much better for his needs than the school here would provide, so I already feel like a hypocrite if I consider a position here. So, thoughts & prayers as this decision is made would be wonderful!

Have a GREAT week!
